It has been an interesting group stage in the second edition of the Pakistan Super League and after 20 games, the Lahore Qalandars were the side that were eliminated. As a result, the Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators , Karachi Kings and Islamabad United have all qualified for the PSL 2017 playoffs.
In the first game of the PSL playoffs, the Quetta Gladiators edged out the Peshawar Zalmi after the latter lost three wickets off the final three deliveries to lose by a run. Karachi Kings routed Islamabad United in the Eliminator to make it to the second Qualifier where they will play Peshawar with the winner of the Karachi-Peshawar match making the final to take on the Gladiators.
Misbah-ul-Haq-led Islamabad United made a good start to the tournament before stumbling a tad after it was announced a couple of their players were allegedly involved in a spot-fixing racket. They came through well but a last game defeat pushed them to the fourth spot behind the Karachi Kings.
It was the Karachi Kings who made a very poor start to the competition with three defeats in three games and would have been knocked out had it not been for Kieron Pollard’s last ball six against the Lahore Qalandars. That was followed by a win over the United to take them to the third spot and a place in the playoffs.
Peshawar and Quetta had contrasting ways of getting to the PSL playoffs. If Peshawar won every alternate game of theirs, to make it nine points from their eight matches, Quetta had a brilliant start to the tournament and might have even ended on 13 points. Unfortunately for them, they lost their last two games to end level on points and finished second on net run-rate to the Zalmis.
