It’s not been a good start for either team in the competition so far. These are two strong sides who were both expected to do deep into the tournament, but neither Lahore, nor Karachi have been able to push their opponents to a large extent.
Lahore Qalandars have won one out of their first three matches, while the Karachi Kings are the only side in the tournament who have gone without a win so far. They have played two games and have zero points.
A lot of the two teams’ problems have to do with their batting. The Qalandars have got quick starts from Brendon McCullum and Jason Roy but the rest of their batsmen have not only struggled to maintain their momentum, they have also been unable to stem the tide of their wickets loss.
What might have been the most embarrassing for a team that is being led by McCullum is their performance in their previous game against the Peshawar Zalmi. Lahore were bowled out for by the Zalmis for 59, the lowsest score in PSL cricket.
While Lahore bowlers made a fist of restricting the opposition to an extent, they went down by three wickets and that leaves them in a bit of a precarious situation.
It’s even worse for the Karachi Kings who have the batting that can take on any attack in the world, but have been woefully underwhelming so far. A team that has the likes of Chris Gayle, Babar Azam, Kumar Sangakkara, Kieron Pollard, Shoaib Malik and Ravi Bopara in their line-up, should not be having too many troubles with their batting but that’s what their problem has been.
The big questions is whether the side can try and bat more cautiously to begin with before going hammer and tongs or will they contiue with their approach of going after their bowling from the word go? Only time will tell but if they want to ensure they can try and comeback in the tournament, Karachi need to start batting with a lot more purpose than they have so far.
