Islamabad United were an unknown quantity when they had gone on to win the PSL in the opening edition but will Misbah ul Haq be able to drive them to the same kind of success. It is tough to know but the fact is they have been bolstered by the presence of some excellent all-rounders like Shane Watson and Andre Russell – it will now be a matter of them drilling out a consistent set of performances to be able to go the distance.
Some of the other players to watch out from the United team are Ben Duckett, Dwayne Smith & Samuel Badree which will make it tough for all opposition given their record at the domestic T20 level around the world.
Hear some of our Pakistan Super League tips & predictions for the second season:
Can Brendon McCullum change Lahore Qalandars fortunes around? Last season they were the only side to have finished in the top four but in letting McCullum take over as the captain, they look to have done a good job for starters. There’s Sohail Tanvir and Sunil Narine who can both prop up their bowling, one of the keys to winning a T20 title, while Jason Roy’s recent in-form batting skills should offer a lot of hope too.
Where Lahore will want to do better is their Pakistani talent, with Umar Akmal, Mohammad Rizwan and Bilawal Bhatti leading the way for them. Can they go the distance though?
The Karachi Kings will be overjoyed that they now have Chris Gayle in the line-up, but while Gayle is a power-packed hitter of the cricket ball, it does not automatically guarantee success for the team. Gayle has been a part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore side in the IPL for years now but they are yet to win the title and the pattern has repeated in Big Bash League cricket as well.
Having said that, the Kings also have Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene to guide their ship if things go wrong and with Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik adding that much more local experience, Karachi’s batting looks sorted. Question is if their bowling can live up to the billing and one would like to believe that the Mohammad Amir-Imad Wasim combination should ensure that will happen.
Despite the transfer of captaincy from Shahid Afridi to Darren Sammy, Peshawar Zalmi need a lot more from everyone else in the squad to come close to winning the title. Trouble is of their most key batsmen Eoin Morgan, it needs to be seen if he will be able to play the entire tournament or just be available for a few of those games.
A lack of quality Pakistani bowling options could peg back the Zalmis unless Afridi can recapture his form from early in his career.
Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Quetta Gladiators do not have too many takers when we conducted a poll on this site, with less than 10% of the fans voting in their favour but take nothing away from the side as they have the likes of Kevin Pietersen and Luke Wright, along side Tymal Mills and Thisara Perera. Veteran Brad Hodge’s presence should help but it will then be down to the Pakistani likes of Ahmed Shehzad and Umar Gul to make the best of their chances.
All five sides are quite evenly matched on paper and it remains to be seen what transpires in the matches. One crucial factor might be how well the players adjust to the conditions in the UAE. Not all of them have played here in the past and even if they have, the players normally take time to adjust. Get all the latest PSL 2 predictions below during the tournament.
